Today marks the commencement of a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering women and combating waste issues in Langchenphu Gewog. Twenty women from the villages of Langchenphu Gewog are participating in a two-week Zero-Waste Craft Training program, organized by the Dzongkhag Administration in collaboration with Samdrup Jongkhar Initiative (SJI) and Langchenphu Gewog Administration. This event is made possible with generous funding from the Department of Tourism under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) project.
The primary objective of this training is twofold: to empower women through skill development in crafting and to raise awareness about waste management practices. By equipping these women with valuable crafting skills, the program aims to provide them with sustainable income-generating opportunities while simultaneously addressing the pressing issue of waste management within the Drungkhag.
Running from March 21st to April 3rd, 2024, the training will cover various aspects of crafting, including innovative methods for utilizing recycled materials.
In addition to the craft training, the Environment Committee of the Dzongkhag has joined forces with SJI to raise awareness about waste-related offenses and penalties.
This collaborative effort between government agencies, non-profit organizations, and local communities exemplifies the commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship in Bhutan. By empowering women, fostering creativity, and promoting waste awareness, this initiative aims to create a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous future for Langchenphu Gewog and beyond.
